Grassroots Festival

Your Guide to the Grassroots Festival

If you’re on the lookout for new, under-the-radar bands and want to support the arts, the environment, and civil rights literacy, you can’t do much better than the Virginia Key Grassroots Festival. Not only does this four-day fest offer a broad spectrum of talented, international performers, and dance and sustainability workshops, its proceeds are funding the construction of a new museum honoring South Florida’s social and civil rights history.

This year’s line-up includes 40+ groups, spanning folk, cajun, bluegrass, Latin, and world music genres. We’re excited to find a healthy dose of our favorite local bands in the mix, like:

__funky electro/jazz/hip-hop group ArtOfficial
__earthy Latin ensemble Elastic Bond
__Wynwood-based rockers Gold Dust Lounge (see their short film)
__dirty blues group JUke
__psychedelic audio-visual collective Nag Campayons from Little Haiti
__Latin jam band Suenalo

In addition to music, the festival offers dance workshops, a Sustainability Fair and Expo, food, drinks, and crafts. Pick up salsa, swing, or hooping moves from an expert instructor, and, if last year’s any indication, yoga and capoeira are available, too. At the Expo, you’ll find green businesses like Car2Go, Piedmont Biofuels, and Slow Money giving demos and devising Miami’s eco-conscious future. There’s even have a Zero Waste crew on hand to help you recycle and compost.

The whole cultural smorgasbord goes down February 21st – 24th in the beautiful Historic Virginia Key Beach Park (get directions). Dig in!
