Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe are one powerhouse duo, as we know firsthand. Moretti has DJed everything from Prabal Gurung’s fashion week extravaganza to Perez Hilton’s SXSW showcase to Chelsea Clinton’s wedding. Her remix of Katy Perry’s “Hot N’ Cold” stayed on Billboard’s dance chart for 10 weeks. Moe, a Florida native, left college to pursue music in Poland and before long was touring India opening for the VH1 sessions concert. The two close friends and frequent collaborators performed at our Art Basel Local Collaborating Artists party and they’ve been gracious enough to give us an interview so we can all get to know them a little better.

Freehand Miami: How did you two start collaborating?

Mia Moretti & Caitlin Moe: We first met in the summer of ’09 when we happened to both be playing solo sets at Ella in the LES. One of our mutual friends introduced us, and a couple months later we were at Mia’s apartment going through records and trying the violin over all sorts of different music.

FH: What brought you two to Freehand Miami?

MM & CM: Art Basel

FH: Had either of you stayed in a hostel before?

MM & CM: Yes

FH: Who had top bunk/bottom bunk?

MM & CM: We both had bottom bunks – we were in a quad! Our clothes had top!

FH: Your styles are unique and cutting edge and your new Pencey Capsule collection is receiving lots of attention. How did you decide it was time to share your style with fans?

MM: I designed pieces that I wasn’t able to find anywhere, but knew I wanted and would wear all the time.  So it was actually quite selfish, but I think most ideas are best if they come directly from your own need – you guys needed a cool place to hang out in Miami, and voila, the Freehand was born and we all reap the benefits! It’s the same when Caitlin and I play music. We trust that if we like it, someone else out there will like it too! Maybe not everyone, but someone!

FH: What designers inspire you?

MM & CM: We really like all the Opening Ceremony collaborations. It’s great to see old brands reinvented in a fresh way. From Gautier to Keds, they’re pretty ingenious over there.

FH: Who are some of your favorite DJs at the moment?

MM & CM: RAC, Classixx, A-Trak, DJ Equal, Eli Escobar, Rory Phillips, Cosmic Kids, Johnny The Boy (Miami, what’s up)!

FH: What’s your favorite thing to do in Miami?

MM & CM: Ride bikes and explore all the districts.

FH: If you could open up a Freehand in any city where would it be?

MM & CM: New Orleans
