Roy Ayers at Broken Shaker
To many, Roy Ayers is known as the godfather of neo-soul — a genre of music that fuses classic soul and contemporary R&B. He has since worked with everyone from Kanye West to Will Downing, and won countless awards along the way. This past November, we were lucky enough to host Ayers at the Broken Shaker at Freehand New York for a night of buoyant tunes and craft cocktails.
All throughout the evening, Ayers — clad in all black — dazzled the packed room with his velvety voice and xylophone stylings, performing popular hits like “Way Down” and “Tipping on Through.” Guests sipped on Bacardi cocktails as Ayers and his band made their way through a nearly three-hour set. It was a great reminder of why, almost sixty years into his career, the man is still a musical legend.
