27 Sep - We wanna be where Gabbriette is!

New York

What can’t Gabbriette Bechtel do? It’s a question you’re left pondering when you first meet the model/photographer/actress/dancer (the list could go on and on), who, only in her early 20s, has already lived several lives — or so it seems. We’re currently crushing hard on her latest project — her band, Nasty Cherry, where Bechtel is, of course, the lead singer. So we sat down with Bechtel to talk about the new band, dream collaborators, and favorite movies.

Freehand: You genuinely are a multifaceted artist — and are so good at everything you do! We are so excited to sit down and chat with you because you are so cool. Can you tell us the origin story of Nasty Cherry?

Gabbriette Bechtel: The idea of Nasty Cherry was started by Charli XCX. She wanted to start a band and pulled all of us chicks in it from the corners of her life. We met up in L.A., lived together for 6 months, wrote loads of music, and boom. We didn’t know one another before that, but we could feel some special shit happening.

FH NY : Where are you from originally, and did you grow up with music as a big part of your life?

GB: I grew up in Orange County — and not particularly. Music was mainly whatever played at dinner parties. My dad loves Norah Jones and my mom loves Seal. I didn’t think much about music until I started dancing early in high school. I had a friend whose dad was always talking about and playing musicians he’d seen live like Jane’s Addiction and Alice Cooper — it always stuck with me.

FH NY: Did you go to school for photography? Which came first — working as a model or working as a photographer?

GB: I did not. I always wanted to properly learn the ins and outs of photography but learning overtime and from friends has been lovely. I started taking pictures of my friends when I was fourteen or fifteen then they started taking photos of me so…it’s like the creative chicken or the egg.

FH NY: Do you have a muse or favorite collaborator?

GB: My dear friend Indiana Piorek.

FH NY: Name your top 5 favorite bands with a female singer

GB: PJ Harvey, Lydia Lunch, No Doubt, The Mamas & Papas, Nina Simone,
Suzi Quatro, The Runaways

FH NY: Top 5 favorite movies?

GB: Are you fucking kidding me? I can’t knock it down to five but:

The Crow
Death Becomes Her
La Vie En Rose
The Basketball Diaries
Jodorowsky’s Dune

FH NY: Nasty Cherry is like a cool girl gang. Do you have a group of girl friends in your life that are your “gang?”

GB: Well now my band. Before that just my mom and sister.
