21 Oct - We’ve Got The Jazz
Even though Chicago is birthplace of the blues, Broken Shaker Chicago is known for hosting eclectic jazz musicians, improvising in the heart of our space. Home to the TIME | SPACE Jazz series, Freehand’s Broken Shaker celebrates a diverse program of ambient & experimental jazz of the contemporary persuasion. Why do we love jazz so much? The spontaneity! This isn’t your grandparents’ jazz (or even your parents’ jazz) but instead, a modern take on the genre with propulsive syncopated rhythms, improvising, and sometimes with the effect of deliberate distortion of pitch and timbre. You never hear the same song twice, so listen closely…or don’t; jazz has no rules.
During the month of September, we welcomed to our space a quintet, comprised of members of the local jazz scene, featuring Quentin Coaxum on Trumpet, Dustin Laurenzi on Tenor Sax, Julius Tucker on Piano, Andrew Vogt on Bass, and Cliff Wallace on Drums. The group played two sets of some of the best jazz in the city.
