The History of the Gramercy Theatre
Initially named the Gramercy Park Theater, this venue was built in 1937 and designed by architect Charles A. Sandblom in the Streamline Moderne style. You may have guessed by its name that the Gramercy Theater is located in the historic Gramercy neighborhood.
In the 1950s, the theater acted as an ‘art house’ due to its eclectic programme of events and was considered ahead of its time. There were a real mix of shows – from foreign, sub-run mainstream, Disney films, and revivals of favorites. In the early 90s, the building was actually used as an anti-drug agency, and also used as the location shoot for The Fugees music video, ‘Killing Me Softly’.
In 1998, the theater was turned into a 499 seat playhouse to showcase Off Broadway productions, making it the largest in the city. From 2002 to 2004, the theater was used as both a film house and an Off Broadway playhouse before being shut down.
In 2006, music giants Live Nation purchased the building with the intention of turning it into an intimate live music venue. And, this is what you can expect to find there now – intimate live music.
